Dear Community,
Like many of you, we are reflecting on the election results and the continued struggle to advance a racially just Oakland within a deeply divisive and oppressive political landscape in our state and nation.
One thing remains certain: our fight for justice neither begins or ends with any election. Real, transformative change is born from the sustained efforts of grassroots movements that have persevered through countless political cycles.
At Akonadi Foundation, we believe democracy is rooted in people power, and that safety, freedom, and justice are built on community, connection, and care—not on fear, oppression, and demagoguery. We are committed to advancing liberation through organizing, civic engagement, and education, and we proudly follow the leadership of movement organizers whose vision for racial justice we wholeheartedly support.
In this moment of transition and uncertainty, we reaffirm our commitment to meet the challenges ahead, standing boldly with our communities, and doubling down on our pursuit of liberation and justice. In 2025, we will expand our support for Oakland’s people-powered movements, making bold, transformative investments in organizations building power year-round to confront structural inequities.
We will also remain steadfast in challenging white nationalism and dismantling white supremacy through building power and uplifting arts and culture and healing spaces for racial justice. Regardless of what the future holds, it’s the people who will push this country forward to being a true multiracial democracy— together, onward, upward, and always in community.
In solidarity,
Akonadi Foundation
