For Immigrant Funders, Today’s Priority Is Direct Relief. What About Tomorrow?

On what would have been Tax Day, California Governor Gavin Newsom took an unprecedented step. Drawing on state coffers, the governor designated a full $75 million for direct cash payment to immigrants—undocumented ones. The state’s new Disaster Relief Fund, designed to fill gaps left by the CARES Act as well as federal and state benefits programs, will provide one-time payments of $500 to roughly 150,000 undocumented adults across the state. That’s a large number, but it’s only a fraction of California’s total undocumented population, estimated at around 2 million. Read More
