Last week, we premiered our short film featuring 2026 Racial Justice Poster Project artist Thi Bui. We are blown away by Thi’s visionary take on protecting those most vulnerable, creating safe spaces for people to show up as their authentic selves, and supporting communities in their own unique ways.
We thank everyone who came out to celebrate, and even if you weren’t able to attend, we encourage you to take 5 minutes to see Thi’s brilliance for yourself.
In the film, Thi shared more about her inspiration for her poster:
“We’re not trying to judge people. We’re not trying to make them fit our systems. We’re trying to listen to them with our whole hearts. And I think, art and stories help bring back the humanity that gets lost in the shuffle.”
Thi’s words and art offer a vision of a future where belonging, care, and collective action help us grow stronger together. Her work is a tribute to Oakland’s enduring spirit — and a powerful reminder that there is no single way to participate in building a racially just world at a time when authoritarianism and self-interest threaten the common good and collective power.
We hope you enjoy Thi’s video and feel as inspired as we do by the creative leaders who help build a racially just Oakland. Akonadi is committed to supporting artists and culture creators, like Thi, who are essential to building power and community in Oakland.
