Today, the moral arc of the universe bent towards justice. Like so many across the globe, we are relieved by today’s verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial for the murder of George Floyd.
There can never be true justice for the families and loved ones of people who lose their lives at the hands of the police. True justice will come when Black communities and communities of color are no longer dehumanized by the very institutions that are supposed to protect and serve them.
While this verdict does not bring back George Floyd, Derek Chauvin will be held accountable. Akonadi Foundation is deeply thankful for the families, organizers, advocates and people who have been unrelenting in their demands to stop police terror.
While we acknowledge this verdict as a step in the right direction, we know it does not erase the countless murders of Black and Brown people at the hands of the state. That is why we must hold ourselves accountable and continue to follow and support the organizers and directly impacted families who are reshaping our country for the better.
We will continue to support Black and people of color-led movements pushing to end oppressive and racist systems. For those of us in philanthropy and positions of power, may our actions and investments be as bold and as swift as our statements.
In community,
Akonadi Foundation
