Forty-four years after the recognition of Black History Month, and 155 years after passage of the
13th Amendment, Black Americans still experience systemic racism, injustice, and stereotyping in
every facet of society. Understanding the foundations of systemic racism and implicit bias and
acknowledging their effects on black Americans and communities of color is the first step toward
change.
