Renee Geesler joined Akonadi Foundation to help increase the organization’s administrative and communications capacity. She serves as Akonadi Foundation’s communications manager and also provides executive administrative support for the Board Chair and Jordan Real Estate Investments.
Renee has worked in the Bay Area non-profit sector for over 18 years. She feels that her purpose is to utilize her background in leadership development, community outreach, and communications to organize for racial justice and local investment in Oakland’s youth. She gains inspiration both from her network of fellow movement makers and from helping social justice organizations advance their vision and programs.
Before joining Akonadi, Renee spent three years at Rockwood Leadership Institute, where she managed Rockwood’s public programs including Art of Leadership, Advanced Art of Leadership, and special trainings. She served as the primary point of contact for over 1,000 non-profit leaders.
Her previous work includes ten years at KPFA Radio, 94.1 FM. As Co-Director of the First Voice Apprenticeship Program at KPFA, Renee trained women and people of color in broadcast journalism, media justice, and personal empowerment. She is the co-founder of Apex Express, KPFA’s Asian American Radio show, and of Full Circle Radio Magazine. Renee was also a contributing producer for the Peabody-awarded documentary on Asian American history, Crossing East.
When she isn’t working, Renee can be found frying donut kebab for @MamacitasCafe Mamacitas Cafe, a women-owned, youth-run cafe, and training program for Oakland girls. Renee loves to garden with her daughter, eat ramen, and read books.
