Public Counsel

Public Counsel: $75,000 for one year.

Over the last year, with the Black Organizing Project, Public Counsel finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oakland Police Department to limit the role of officers working on school campuses, focusing on reducing disproportionate arrests and citations of youth of color. The MOU secured revisions to Oakland public schools’ discipline policies to emphasize school- and classroom-based alternatives and set strong goals for reducing suspensions of African-American students. In the next year, Public Counsel seeks an end to suspensions for “willful defiance,” a category that disproportionately affects students of color, and will push to redirect funding for campus police to programs for youth success.
