
The Akonadi Foundation sponsors a annual contest to encourage a creative outpouring of posters that reflect people in communities of color, their movements to for social change and their vision for a world without racism. We are pleased to announce the selection of our 2011 Racial Justice Poster Contest winner. "End Internalized Oppression" by Ernesto Yerena was selected as the 2011 Akonadi Foundation Racial Justice Poster. "End Internalized Oppression” will be printed as a postcard and poster that commemorates that will be distributed to racial justice organizations across the country, as well as to foundations and other allies.
March 21, 2011 marks the fifty-first anniversary of the Sharpeville uprising in South Africa, when police opened fire on a crowd of peaceful black demonstrators protesting apartheid “pass laws.” The United Nations
General Assembly later proclaimed March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Akonadi Foundation celebrates this day through art that gives tribute to the courage of those engaged in the ongoing struggle for racial justice. We invite you to join us in remembering and honoring the work of the many racial justice activists both past and present.
